“What the Water Gave Me” was the darkest of the songs I filmed For Florence + the Machine. It was also my favorite look. Her voice is so ethereal. When restrained, it transports the listener. To express that idea, we suspended twinkling light bulbs in a black void. At full throttle, Florence’s voice cuts you with sorrow and beauty and lift. Just made me think of penetrating red shafts of light. Filmed with 4 cameras, one on a dolly, and one on a small crane. Directed by Michelle Stahl.
